This is one of those times.
The other week, I went round my Dad's for dinner and we were aimlessly looking through NOWTV for something to watch. I landed on Wayward Pines and decided to give it a go.
I'd heard little about it before, only that it was similar to Twin Peaks (which I'd watched a little bit of in college and have been meaning to watch the rest of ever since). I'd put Wayward Pines at the back of my mind back then, thinking it would be fun to watch in the near future but myself and my Dad settled on it that night as I knew it was my Dad's type of show as well as mine.
We were hooked from episode one, and I was seriously angry that no one had recommended it to me previously. So here I am, recommending it to you. I may even make a series of this. Brief posts recommending cool TV shows to watch that you may or may not have already heard of.
Of course, I won't be writing about huge shows like Breaking Bad or Stranger Things because, c'mon, everyone knows about them and how awesome they are. But shows like Wayward Pines or the Scream series. You may have heard about them, but a lot of people haven't. And those who have probably aren't aware of how cool they are. So, here we go.
Five reasons why you should binge watch Wayward Pines like, now.
THE PREMISE IS AMAZING
Wayward Pines is based on the novels of the same name by Blake Crouch, and usually books that get made into TV series are pretty amazing. It has similar themes to all sorts of cool science TV/film such as Twin Peaks, Lost and even The Truman Show. Without wanting to give too much away, the general premise is that a U.S Secret Service agent, played by Matt Dillon, heads to the small town of Wayward Pines to investigate the disappearance of two fellow agents. But when he finds himself unable to leave or contact the outside world, it soon becomes clear that Wayward Pines is anything but a normal town.
IT'S GOT A PRETTY GOOD CAST, TOO
Matt Dillon, Juliette Lewis, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Terrence Howard and Shannyn Sossamon all star, as well as newcomers such as Charlie Tahan.
IT'S PRODUCED BY M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN
If that's not enough of a selling point for you, I don't know what is. M. Night Shyamalan has some really unique work, so you know Wayward Pines is gonna offer some twists. As well as producing the show, he also directed the pilot episode.
IT KEEPS YOU GRIPPED...IN A GOOD WAY
Honestly, when I saw that it's a series produced by M. Night Shyamalan, I groaned. I was convinced it was going to be another Lost, where no answers were ever given to the show's mysteries. But Wayward Pines has plenty of twists and answers, as well as continually delivering more and more to keep you gripped. You won't be able to watch just one or two episodes because you'll be too eager to find out what happens next.
THERE'S ALREADY TWO SEASONS AVAILABLE
Yep. Although there wasn't supposed to be a second season originally, there is, and each season has ten full length 40 minutes/hour long episodes. It'll at least take you a good few days to get through both seasons which is perfect for when you have a weekend off.
