LIFESTYLE REVIEW | Jack the Ripper Tour

Would you believe that up until recently, I'd never been on a walking tour.

Despite living close to London and loving the idea of a ghost walk and all different types of tours, I'd never got around to actually going on one.

So when Discovery Tours and Events approached me to ask if I'd like to try out their Jack the Ripper Tour, I jumped at the chance.

I've always had an odd fascination with Jack the Ripper, finding the whole mystery surrounding the killer beyond interesting. Over the years, I've read a few books and watched one or two documentaries on the subject so I was really excited to experience something a bit more hands on and actually see where some of the crimes took place.

I was beyond impressed with the tour.

First of all, our tour leader Lindsay was beyond lovely and was ever so charismatic. What I loved was that she wasn't just an enthusiast on the subject - she's written a book and has actually studied the subject.

I later found out all guides have academic/professional links to Jack the Ripper, meaning that we knew all information we were told was actually legitimate and not just hearsay.

The two hour tour took us around different sites in London - all local, but all necessary to the case - and the tour was just the right length. We stopped plenty of times so that despite walking a lot, we weren't out of breath or exhausted and the speed was just right too (which I was worried about because I'm lazy af!).

I was quite surprised at how much we learned on the tour too - obviously I'd read up about Jack the Ripper and knew his killings were gruesome but this tour made me realize just how messed up the whole thing was.

I learned a lot of new things about the case and these facts seriously leave me feeling disturbed.

Lindsay and the tour did a great job of making us really feel like we were in the same time era as the murders, thanks to the photographs she showed us and the way she explained how our surroundings had changed over the years.

More than once I found myself feeling like I was back in 1988 and I can imagine that's not easy to do when essentially you're just walking around London.

I also learned a lot about London as a whole back then which I didn't expect so those nice additional little facts were really interesting to hear too.

For example, did you know that in a doorway in Whitechapel, the police found Jack the Ripper's only clue, and today you can stand on the very spot where the infamous murderer once stood?!

We also got to see an alternative side of London and tons of awesome graffiti and street art - even though that wasn't the subject of the tour.

I attended the tour with my friend Briony, who commented,

"The tour was really interesting, and I found out lots of new facts. Lindsay was entusiastic and told us about lots of different theories I hadn't heard before. It exceeded my expectations and I recommended it to all my friends!"

I really enjoyed this tour - it was informative, scary and even a little humorous at times too.

I walked away wondering why I hadn't booked onto it sooner, especially as I'd heard nothing but great things about the tour previously.

The tour began at 7pm and by half nine we were back on our train making our way out of London, so its the perfect add on to a day spent in the city without finishing too late.

If you have a fascination with crime or London's history, then this is definitely a tour worth taking.

  5. Aw this sounds great - I love things like this! I live in London too and always assumed these things were just for tourists and not actually informative so I'm so pleased to see that. I remember going to the London Dungeons years ago hoping to learn more like an idiot and it was all just trying to make people jump and no actual information. I'd love to try this now having seen your review :) xx
