LIFESTYLE | Immersive Books for the New Year

Since colouring books are so last year, I've put together a quick guide to the best immersive books you can try your hand at or participate in for the new year.

If you don't know what an immersive book is, it's kind of hard to slump them all into one category. But, for the most part, they're half book/half art, which draws on your participation to make it fun. Nearly all of them have prompts from drawing and getting creative, to really thinking about your life and writing things down about yourself.

Although they can be a lot of fun too, these type of books are a great excuse to zone in on yourself in the new year and take a look at yourself and your life. Some of them are great for reminiscing on your favourite memories, some are ideal for taking a look at what's wrong and whats right with your life, and some are just a welcome break and a fun way to tap back into your creative side.

They're great because they focus on you and making you happy, and putting aside even just a couple of hours each week to explore these books is like self-therapy in itself. Taking the time to concentrate on just you, after a hard week of working, is always a good thing.

Here are some of my favourites.

LISTOGRAPHY: YOUR LIFE IN LISTS
Listography is probably one of the first immersive books and it's still going, having branched out further into other themed listed books such as Travel Listography and Music Listography - both of which I want. There's just so much choice! Listography is a simple way to keep track of your memories and favourite things - it's like a more simplified version of a diary and is something you'd likely flick through in years to come. Although perhaps it's one you shouldn't share with your kids one day, as one prompt is about sexual fantasies...

WRECK THIS JOURNAL
Wreck This Journal is actually quite famous and was the first 'immersive' book I owned. It's great because it's so easy to dip in and out of and it really does tap into your creative side - it encourages you to get dirty and suggests that even beauty can be found in havoc/mess etc. The prompts vary, from gluing a random page from the newspaper into the book to bringing the book into the shower with you.

This book also has a special place in my heart because it introduced me to these types of books and I discovered it in the most random way - simply nestled between books in that creative aisle of TK Maxx. It was like fate! Until that day, I had no idea this type of book even existed.

MAP MY HEART
Map My Heart is an ode to your heart - whether you're single, taken or in between the two. I think it's most beneficial when you're actually frustrated with love, as it's the perfect way to let out your anger and sit down and take a look at yourself, your love life and where you may be going wrong. It's like therapy in book form and is super creative - it's filled with advice too and encourages you to partake in hilarious creative tasks such as designing tattoos for someone else's ass! So hilarious. Plus the illustrations are super cool, and I may or may not have pretty much convinced Dom & Ink (the man behind this amazing book) to illustrate my zombie book when it one day gets published...

MY ADVENTURES IN ONLINE DATING
Okay, this one was actually a joke gift from my friend for Christmas BUT after flicking through, I've discovered it's actually quite useful. It's kind of like a modern day black book - you can use it to keep track of and rate all your dates, there's space for memorable first messages and even a couple of pages to sum up your profile - this is ideal if you're a newbie to the world of online dating. It's great for serial daters and the modern day digital dater who has profiles on every dating website and app going.

MY LIFE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL JOURNEY
This was a super cute gift from my sister - she knows me too well! It's a little like Listography but much more in depth and sincere. The name explains it all really - it's a really lovely way to write all about your life, your memories and such and the type of journal to keep in the family - especially if you don't actually write a diary. Some prompts include writing about essentials you can't live without, your favourite Christmas and birthday gifts and naughty moments to regale your grandchildren with. This last prompt is the ideal way to remind your grand kids that you're uber cool and got up to no good once too - but without going into too much detail. Mine entry mainly consists of adventurous nights out with my favourite rockstars - go figure..

Do you have any creative or immsersive books like these you can recommend? Or have you ever tried any of the above? Let me know!
