As 2014 draws to an end, I find myself thinking about my favourite things from the past year - the best memories, the fun trips I've taken..and my favourite music throughout.

There are a few albums I've found myself coming back to over and over again this year without fail. Looking back at my choices, I'm pretty sure none of them have actually been released this year but never mind - I think we all agree that it's important to have a mix of new AND old music in our music collection.

Here's what I've been listening to non-stop in 2014.

I'll come back to this album every few months or so and find myself listening to it like it's the first time I've ever heard it. Each time I do, I'm amazed at just how good it is and end up favouring different songs each time. Then I'll get into some other album for a couple of months...and inevitably always come back to this. I really love this album because on one hand it's kind of real different from Fall Out Boy's 'normal' stuff - their older stuff was heavier, whereas I did feel the album before this one was a little too mainstream & scene. This one is the perfect mix between the two - very upbeat & catchy, with lots of subtle nods to their old stuff as well.

I love, love LOVE this album and I can't really put my finger on why. I wouldn't usually say this was 'my' type of music and my brother even called them kind of folky but there's just something about this album. I know I'm not the only one either because this band have become pretty damn big in the last year. This album is perfect for lazy listening and is the ideal soundtrack for hot summer days.

Another album I am completely addicted to without even knowing why exactly. I just love it's dark, deep sound and this album just has a really edgy side to it. It's filled with those types of songs that you can listen to and feel like the lyrics themselves have been picked from your brain, as if the band themselves are in exactly the same situation as you with the same thoughts, beliefs and feelings. I particularly love Trophy - a song that, for me, sums up some brutally honest feelings about the early days of falling for someone when it's all falling apart.

I've actually only been addicted to this album within the last few months after catching them on the 8123 tour but have totally fallen for their indie and sort of punk rock sound. This is another album that's pretty easy listening and a rare one that I can't decide whether some of the songs sound better on stage or on the album. When seeing them live for the first time, the lead singer really captivated me as he gave everything in his performance and I think I fell in love with these songs live in that setting. Never the less, the album lives up to the live versions of the songs and has become a firm favourite in only a few months.

So this probably isn't a big surprise to most people - this was without a doubt a top album for so many people this year but it's kind of surprising for me! It took me a long, long time to get into Ed Sheeran and I was still listening to his older album on repeat when this one was released. Eventually I moved on and fell in love with this album, simply because it's romantic, gripping, easy listening, emotional, sweet...and more. Some favourite tracks from this album include I'm A Mess, Thinking Out Loud and The Man. I'm not ashamed to say I've fallen asleep to this album on many, many nights!

What have been your favourite albums of 2014? Have you listened to really popular albums or have you been listening to albums from more obscure unknown artists? Let me know!

  1. I've only heard Ed Shereen but the others are on my list now!

  2. I have't listened to any of these albums! My favourite has been Manic Street Preachers, Lana Del Rey and Sivu.
